A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
